One fine October day, in 2000, the Washington, DC metro area group of Utne Readers, and participants in the Washington, DC Area Cafe Discussion, had a delightful picnic in the Catoctin Mountains, northwest or Frederick, Maryland, and hosted by Kai Hagen and his family.
A wonderful gourmet potluck picnic ensued, and a walk around the property. We were not only treated to the glorious bounty of nature, but marveled at the beauty and labor in the new homesite of Kai, his wife and young brood. We climbed slender pathways through the brightly colored woods, crossed a bridge of timbers, and came to a clearing at the edge of the pond, complete with tiny island.
Some folks returned to the picnic site to share good company and these take photographs while the more adverturous souls took a further walk around the mountain. A good time was had by all.
